Windows 10 Creators Update is finally available for everyone. You must have already upgraded from Windows 10 Anniversary to Creators Update. Still, many of us wondering if we should upgrade to Creators Update or stick to Anniversary Update. To help you decide this, I have covered some best features that are available in Creators Update of Windows 10. I have also added how to use those features. You can have a look at these features and decide if you should upgrade your Windows 10 PC to Creators Update or not.
With this upgrade, Windows 10 has become more useful, as per what I think. We can now draw in 3D, set color temperature of display (Night light feature), pin Films & TV app on top, set tabs aside for later use (Microsoft Edge), add live tiles in one folder in Start menu, use Dynamic lock to automatically lock PC, set custom accent color, install a lot of free themes, hide Apps list in Start menu, and much more.
These features look interesting, isn’t it! So let’s see 20 best features of Windows 10 Creators Update that are useful for regular users like me and you. I’m gonna start with my favorite feature i.e. Night light mode.
1). Night Light mode To Set Color Temperature of Display In Windows 10
Night light feature helps to adjust brightness and color temperature of your Windows 10 PC. When this mode is activated, then display is turned into a bit warmer color (something like yellowish). You can either use this feature with default mode or set color temperature as per your wish. Before applying the changes, you can also preview color temperature while adjusting it. So this will help you choose the best color temperature for your eyes.
Night light feature can be turned on manually or automatically (by scheduling time), whatever you prefer. You can use this feature by accessing Settings app > Display > Night light settings. We have also covered detailed information about Night light feature.
2). Set Tabs Aside In Microsoft Edge
Set tabs aside in Microsoft Edge is a fantastic feature that helps to store tabs of a particular session for later use. What you need to do is click on ‘Set these tabs aside‘ icon visible on the top left side in Microsoft Edge when you have opened multiple tabs. As soon as you click that icon, all the current tabs are moved in the list of tabs that you’ve set aside.
Clicking on the ‘Tabs you’ve set aside‘ icon available on top left corner in Microsoft Edge will help you access all those tabs. Now you can either restore all those tabs in one go or click on a particular tab to restore it. The more icon (three horizontal dots) also helps to add all your asided tabs to favorites and share those tabs.
3). Pin Films & TV App To Watch Movies or TV Shows In Mini Mode and Work With Other Applications
You may call it a hidden feature, but it is true that Films & TV app of Windows 10 now comes with a mini mode. That simply means that you can pin this app to keep it on top of other opened windows. As a result, you will be able to keep an eye on your favorite TV show episode or movie while working with other windows. In fact, I am writing about this feature while watching one of my favorite movies.
To activate Mini Mode for Films & TV app, you need to click on ‘Play in mini mode‘ icon available just before Full Screen icon.
When Mini Mode is activated, you won’t be able to jump to a particular position as there will be no playback slider. So this mode is useful only when you want to continue watching your favorite show or movie while working with other applications.
Also, the app provides option to leave the Mini mode, but doing so showed an error when I was testing this. So, if this is the problem with my PC, then it is OK. Otherwise, if this is a bug, then it should be fixed ASAP.
4). Add Start Menu Live Tiles In A Folder
I was waiting for this feature since a very long time. Finally, with Creators Update, now we can add live tiles of Windows 10 Start menu in a folder. Thus, multiple tiles related to a particular category can be stored in a single folder within the Start menu. This will help organizing Start menu tiles in a better way. Since the folder is also visible as a tile, so you can also resize that folder.
To add Start menu live tiles in a folder, just drag a tile and drop it on another tile. This will automatically create a tile folder and add those tiles in that folder within Start menu automatically. You can check this guide to learn more about this feature.
5). Automatically Lock Your PC When You Are Away
Windows 10 Creators Update has introduced a Dynamic lock feature that is really interesting. Using this feature, you can take the help of Bluetooth and your phone to automatically lock your PC. Basically, when the connected phone is out of Bluetooth range, then an action is triggered, and your Windows 10 PC is locked automatically.
To use Dynamic lock, you first have to turn on Bluetooth of your phone and PC and connect them. You can access Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices > Add Bluetooth or other device. This will help you connect phone and PC using Bluetooth. Once the phone is paired and connected with your PC, then you can turn on this feature. Go to Settings app > Accounts > Sign-in options. Now you will see Dynamic lock feature that you can turn on in a click.
A few important points should also be noted about this Dynamic lock feature. It works only once at a time. That means when you move away with your phone and phone is out of Bluetooth range, then PC is locked. After that, you need to turn on this feature again. Also, you can connect any phone (Android, Windows Phone, etc.) to use this feature.
6). Show Tab Previews In Microsoft Edge
Another interesting feature is added in Microsoft Edge, which is to Show tab previews. Now you can preview all opened tabs in Microsoft Edge using the thumbnails of those tabs. Before Creators Update, hovering the mouse cursor on a background tab is used to show tab preview in a thumbnail, but that was not sufficient to preview the content of that webpage. So this feature is enhanced further. Now you can see thumbnails of all opened tabs together and clicking on a thumbnail will show you the tab preview in full size.
You will see a drop down icon just before new tab or ‘+‘ icon. Clicking that icon will show the thumbnails of all opened tabs. You can click on the thumbnail of any tab to preview that particular tab or webpage. This way, previewing tabs becomes easier in Microsoft Edge. You can hide tab thumbnails using the same drop down/drop up icon to continue browsing and reading the webpages.
7). Hide Apps Lists In Start Menu of Windows 10
Want to hide Apps from Windows 10 Start menu? It is possible now. By hiding apps, you will be able to see only live tiles in Start menu of Windows 10. That doesn’t mean that Apps list can’t be accessed after hiding it. When only live tiles are visible, then you can use the left sidebar of Start menu to access Apps list. Thus, it will be very simple to switch between live tiles and Apps list in Start menu of Windows.
You can also get back to the default mode of Start menu anytime. That means you can set Start menu again to show Apps list and live tiles. For more details, you can read this guide to hide apps from Start menu of Windows 10.
8). New Paint 3D App To Show Your Drawing Skills In 3D
Paint 3D is one of the best features of Windows 10 Creators Update and is appreciated by users a lot. From kids to elders, this app is for everyone. You can use 3D models, objects, and doodles in your drawing. 2D shapes, various stickers, and textures are also available to use. You can also add you own sticker (JPG, PNG, ICO, GIF, TIFF, TIF, BMP, etc.) in drawing. The best part is that any shape and sticker can be turned into 3D shape in just one click.
When your drawing in ready, you can preview it in 3D, and also save the project as 3D for later use. Your drawing can also be exported as 3D (*.fbx and *.3mf) or 2D image file. So this is quite an amazing app that makes drawing more interesting.
Do note that Paint 3D has not replaced MS Paint in Windows 10. Both apps can be used separately.
9). Use Custom Accent Color To Apply On Start Menu, Action Center, Title Borders, Etc
This is one of my favorite features of Windows 10 Creators Update. Earlier, there were only 48 accent colors that can be applied to Start menu, Action Center, Title Borders, etc. With Creators Update, now you can choose any of your favorite color to use as Accent Color in Windows 10.
You can use a color palette to select your favorite color. You can also manually add RGB values or enter hex color code to use that color as Accent Color. This feature also helps you show color preview and suggests if the selected color is good to apply or it might be hard to read.
To select a custom accent color, go to Settings > Personalization > Colors. Now you will see accent colors. Just below them, Custom color option will visible (as highlighted in a box in above image). Click that option and a ‘Choose a custom accent color’ pop-up will visible. Use that pop-up and color palette to choose your favorite color, preview it, and apply it.
10). Enable Game Mode To Improve Overall Gaming Experience
Windows 10 has also taken care of game lovers. Therefore, it has come with a new Game Mode feature in Creators Update. When the Game Mode is turned on, the priority by GPU and CPU is given to the games rather than other background applications. This helps in improving the gaming experience in Windows 10 PC.
Game Mode feature is available under a new Gaming menu, which is added in Settings app of Windows 10. To activate Game Mode, you can go to Settings > Gaming > Game Mode > Use Game Mode. Turn on the button available for Use Game Mode option. This is it! Game Mode is turned on. You can turn it off anytime you want.
11). 170+ Free Themes for Windows 10 PC Available In Windows Store
This much awaited feature is finally available in Windows 10 i.e. free themes for Windows 10. There are more 170 free themes available in Windows Store. You can preview themes and then install any theme on your Windows 10 PC. Before, there were only 3 default themes that can be used. Now we have a whole treasure of themes.
To access themes, go to Settings > Personalization > Themes. After that, you will see Get more themes in the Store option. Use that option and Windows Store will open presenting all the free themes.
12). Capture A Specific Region Of Desktop Screen Using A Hotkey
I really like this feature a lot because I have to capture screenshots regularly. Before Creators Update, capturing desktop screen natively was possible using ‘PrtScn’ or ‘Win+PrtScn’. While PrtScn key copies entire desktop to clipboard, Win+PrtScn hotkey captures whole desktop and save it to clipboard.
Now with Creators Update, you can capture a specific region of desktop screen using Win+Shift+S hotkey. Use this hotkey and then whole desktop screen will cover with a white translucent sheet. Your mouse cursor will also turn into a crosshair icon. This is it! Now select any specific area and it will be copied to the clipboard. This feature doesn’t save the captured region automatically, which I wanted in this feature. So you have to manually paste the capture region to MS Paint or other image editor software to save that screenshot.
13). Capture Lock Screen By Just Pressing A Single Key
Want to share a beautiful wallpaper visible on your Windows 10 Lock Screen with others or need to capture lock screen for your own purpose? This is possible using PrtScn hotkey. Use this hotkey and lock screen will be copied to clipboard.
After that, you can sign in to your Windows 10 PC and then paste the clipboard content to MS Paint or some other image editor. Finally, you can then save the lock screen as an image (PNG, JPG, BMP, etc.) to your PC.
This feature is helping me a lot for testing purposes 😉
14). You Can Pause Windows 10 Updates for Maximum 35 Days
You must be very happy to know (I am really) that now you can pause Windows 10 updates for maximum 35 days. So, when you are running low on data, you don’t have to worry if your data will be consumed by Windows 10 updates, that you want to avoid temporarily. Using this feature, Windows 10 updates won’t download automatically and it has to wait till 35 days.
To activate this feature, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Under Windows Update, Advanced options will visible, as highlight in the above image. Click that option and then under Advanced options, you will see Pause Updates option. Turn off that option and it will pause Windows updates for 35 days.
15). Storage Sense Feature To Help You Automatically or Manually Free Up Disk Space
Storage Sense seems to be a good option to gain some disk space. Basically, this feature helps to delete the temporary files that aren’t used by apps anymore and clears Recycle bin containing files for over 30 days. This way, it can help you recover some free space on your Windows 10 PC. This feature can be used to automatically free up disk space or you can manually use it.
To use this feature, access Settings app > System menu > Storage option. After that, you will see Storage sense feature. By default, this feature is turned off. You can turn it on to automatically free up disk space with default settings.
Or else, you can use Choose how we free up space option. When you will use this option, then you can set if you want to delete temporary files that aren’t accessed by apps anymore, or delete files available in recycle bin for more than 30 days, or you want to enable both the options. You can see the image above for reference. If you don’t want to schedule this option, then simply use Clean now button to immediately use Storage sense feature based on the selected options.
16). Automatically Turn On WiFi On Scheduled Time
This is a good feature that can be used when you have manually turned off WiFi. You can Turn Wi-Fi back on “In 1 hour”, “In 4 hours”, or “In 1 day”. There is no option to set custom time to turn on WiFi, but still it is good. Also, do note that this feature can’t be used when you have enabled airplane mode.
Click Wi-Fi icon visible in Windows 10 system tray and a pop-up will open. In that pop-up, you will see drop down menu to help you set option to turn on WiFi based automatically based on the selected option.
17). You Can Now Use Microsoft Edge as ePub Reader or eBook Reader App
Microsoft Edge now natively supports ePub files. In fact, it is automatically set as your default ePub reader application. While PDF files are already supported, ePub can also be opened in Microsoft Edge. One of the best features of ePub reader of Microsoft Edge is that it can Read aloud ePub content for you. That is quite useful, isn’t it! You can also adjust reading speed, pause reading, switch to next and previous paragraphs, and change voice.
Three voices are available to choose from: Microsoft David Mobile, Microsoft Zira Mobile, and Microsoft Mark Mobile. All the voice are currently available in English US only. May be we will get more voices and support of different languages with new version of Edge browser.
ePub reader of Edge browser also comes with a slider to navigate ePub pages, search feature, shows table of contents and bookmarks (if available in ePub file), option to add bookmarks, adjust text size and spacing, change font, and theme of ePub reader. Sepia, Light, and Dark themes are available for ePub reader.
18). A Separate Section Available for Troubleshooting Different Devices
This feature can help you fix some basic problems related to different devices. As an example, you can use this feature to find and fix problems that you are facing while connecting to internet, playing audio, Blue Screen error, keyboard, Bluetooth, Recording Audio, Power, Network Adapter, Speech, Search and Indexing, and more. Instead of opening different windows and accessing multiple options, all troubleshooting related problems can be found in one place.
To use this feature, launch Settings > Update & security > Troubleshoot. Now you can troubleshoot any supported problem.
19). Windows Defender Now Available As Universal Windows Platform (UWP), Better UI
Those who use Windows Defender must be happy to know that Windows Defender is now available as an app for Windows 10. It has a better UI and is easier to use. Its revamped interface helps you check and manage Virus & threat protection, Device performance & health, App & browser control options, Family options (to use parental controls) etc., using separate sections.
It also protects you from malicious files and websites while using Microsoft Edge and IE. Its SmartScreen filter can also protect you from harmful content that is accessed by apps (if any). So it’s a good news for users who use Windows Defender regularly.
20). Microsoft Edge Automatically Blocks Untrusted Adobe Flash Content
Microsoft Edge now blocks untrusted flash content available on a webpage by default. Still, if you trust the content and want to access the blocked Adobe Flash Content of a particular webpage, then it can be done easily.
When flash content is blocked, you will see a Block icon just before Reading view icon in the address bar of Microsoft Edge. Clicking that icon will help you open a po-up and select if you want to allow Adobe Flash to run. You can set Allow once or Always allow option, whatever you prefer.
You can also enable/disable option to Use Adobe Flash manually. For this, Open Microsoft Edge > click Settings and More icon > Settings option > View advanced settings button/option > turn on/off Use Adobe Flash Player option.
There are many other features and/or changes that are introduced in Windows 10 Creators Update:
- Registry Editor now supports an address bar to copy and paste a particular Registry address so that you can directly access a specific registry key.
- Windows PowerShell has replaced Command Prompt in Win+X Menu, but you can add it again. Go to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar. There you will option to replace Command Prompt with Windows PowerShell, which is turned on. You can turn off that option to view Command Prompt in Win+X menu again.
- Cortana’s recurring reminders.
- Mixed Reality.
- You have the option to sign in with your Microsoft account to all apps or just a specific app.
- Mail app of Windows 10 now provides Focused and Other email sections for Inbox. It is quite helpful to pay attention to those emails that matter the most and put rest of the emails to Other section.
So here I wrap up this list of 20 best features of Windows 10 Creators Update. Hope it will help you take the decision if you should upgrade to Creators Update.
