Outlook.com has millions of active users. Microsoft has also introduced new features in Outlook.com beta to make it more useful and attract new users. Many users have already enabled Outlook beta (I’m one of them) to enjoy new features, faster experience, better personalization, Inbox, etc. Among all the new and already available features, reading pane in Outlook.com is the one that catches the attention easily. This feature helps users check emails without going back and forth. When you click on an email, it will open in the right section. While many users are happy to have it, others find it a bit annoying because reading pane space is not big enough and sometimes it is difficult to read an email properly. So, if you are also not liking this feature and want to hide reading pane in Outlook.com, then this guide is definitely helpful for you. You can also show reading pane again, whenever you want it.
To show or hide reading pane in Outlook.com, Microsoft has provided built-in option under the Settings. By default, reading pane remains enabled, but you have the option to toggle it. This step by step guide will help you how you can do that. Before that, let’s see how your Outlook.com will look with reading pane turned on.
As you can see, the left section shows the list of emails. When you will click on an email, it will open in the right section where you can see attachments, email subject, and message available in your email.
Now look at the image below with reading pane turned off in Outlook.com. You will see the list of emails (just like it is visible before) including the preview of attachment for emails.
Now let’s see the steps. I’m assuming that you are already using Outlook.com beta. Even if you have not opted for its beta version, Outlook.com will have the same settings when beta features will be a part of the stable release of it.
Steps To Show or Hide Reading Pane In Microsoft Outlook.com:
1). Access outlook.live.com and then sign in to your Outlook.com account.
2). Your Outlook Inbox will open and the reading pane is enabled by default.
3). Tap on ‘Settings‘ icon and Quick Settings will open.
4). Quick Settings has Inbox layout that contains two options: Show reading pane and Hide reading pane. You need to enable Hide reading pane option.
This will instantly hide reading pane and only the list of emails of the selected label (Inbox, Sent, etc.) will visible.
To show reading pane in Outlook.com again, you can simply open Quick Settings and select ‘Show reading pane‘ option.

Reading pane in Outlook.com is very much similar to the feature available in Windows 10 Mail app and some other email services. However, Outlook.com has provided the option to show or hide reading pane which is very helpful. Those who like reading pane to check emails in Outlook.com, they can keep this feature enabled. Other users, who want to check emails with the traditional style, they just need to access Settings of Outlook.com and disable or turn off reading pane.
