Windows 10 comes with new features time to time. All such features make it more user-friendly. Whatever not present earlier in Windows 10, Microsoft brought it with preview builds and then stable updates and this cycle continues. You can use floating Search box, set bandwidth to download updates, Controlled Folder Access feature to protect important folders from ransomware, etc. These are a few examples. Windows 10 is bringing more features to help users. One of such awesome and new features is you can add the security questions on lock screen in Windows 10 for local account. Yes! This amazing feature is now available in Windows 10.
You must be wondering what is the use of security questions on Windows 10 lock screen. So, here is the answer. By adding security questions, you can reset Local account password right from lock screen. There are total 6 security questions and you have to set maximum 3 security questions to visible on the lock screen. Whenever you forget local account password, simply press “Reset password” option on the lock screen. After that, you will see 3 security questions added by you. Add answers and then you can set a new password for your local account. Windows 10 already has a feature to reset password for Microsoft account from lock screen but such feature was not there for Local account. Thankfully, now it is possible. You just need to use Settings of Windows 10 and then access Sign-in options page to set security questions.
What you see above is my Windows 10 lock screen for local account. You can clearly see that 3 security questions are visible on the lock screen. For each question, there is a security answer box. After adding all three answers correctly, I was able to easily reset my local account password. If you also want to do the same, then this step by step guide will help how to do that.
Before you rush, you should also note that this feature has not come with some update of Windows 10 Fall Creators Update or earlier versions. Adding security questions on lock screen is introduced with preview build 17063 of Windows 10. That means, if you want to use this feature now, then you have to join beta program for Windows 10 and update your PC to preview build 17063. Or else, you need to wait until the next stable update.
So, now you have all the information. Let’s see the steps to enable this feature.
Steps To Add Security Questions On Lock Screen In Windows 10 Local Account:
1). Press ‘Win+I‘ hotkey to open Windows Settings. You can also press the Start button and then tap on Settings icon to open it.
2). In Windows Settings, tap on ‘Accounts‘.
3). In Accounts, tap on ‘Sign-in options‘ page.
4). Select ‘Update your security questions‘ option visible on the right section in the Sign-in options page. You may see the screenshot added below for reference.
5). Windows Security box will open. Here, you have to enter the local account password. This is mandatory to select security questions.
6). There it is! Now you will see drop down option for the first security question. Click on drop down option and you will see 6 preset security questions: What’s the first name of your oldest cousin?, What’s the name of the city where you were born?, What was your childhood nickname? etc. Select any question and then add an answer of your choice. Do note you can not select the already selected question for the second security question. Also, creating a custom security question is not available but you can set answer of your choice for any security question.
Select any of the available questions and set its answer. Do the same for rest of the two questions.
7). When all the three questions are set, tap on ‘Finish‘ button.
This is it! You have successfully set security questions to reset local account password from lock screen of Windows 10.
Whenever you forget password for local account and you are not able to remember it anyway, then use ‘Reset password‘ option on lock screen and then security questions will visible. Add answers to all those questions and then Windows 10 will prompt you to set a new password. Once you have set the new password, you can access your Windows 10 desktop.
Personally, I’m quite happy that feature to set security questions for Windows 10 local account is here. It happened twice that I forgot my local account password and then I had no choice except formatting the PC and installing Windows again. Though you can create a USB password reset disk to change the local account password, using security questions feature is more convenient. I hope this guide will make it very simple to do the same. Try it and also share it with others.
