Windows Registry is the central system of any Windows OS. It stores crucial options and settings using which we can do a lot of customizations. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKEY_CURRENT_USER are those two Registry root keys we have to access for most of the changes. While it is really easy to access any of these two keys, sometimes it happens that we need to do the customization under HKLM (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE) or HKCU (HKEY_CURRENT_USER), but we mistakenly open HKLM or HKCU key.
Still, not to worry if you are using Windows 10. It is so because you can easily switch between HKLM or HKCU under any specific Registry key, which is available under both of these keys. For example, if you want to access SOFTWARE key which is available in HKLM and HKCU, you can do it very easily. Instead of coming out from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/HKEY_CURRENT_USER to back to HKCU/HKLM, you can easily switch between HKLM and HKCU without going back and forth.
What you see above is that I accessed SOFTWARE key available under HKLM, but in the right-click menu, the option is available to access the same key under HKCU. If you still didn’t understand, then not to worry. You can follow the steps available below.
Switch Between HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKEY_CURRENT_USER Root Keys in Windows 10:
This is possible only if one Registry key is available under both the root keys. Otherwise, it is not possible. Here are the steps:
Step 1: Use the Run Command (Win+X and then type regedit) or Search box to open Windows 10 Registry Editor window.
Step 2: Access a Registry key which is available under both the root Registry keys. For example, SOFTWARE key is available under both the Registry key.
Step 3: Now if you have accessed Registry key in HKLM or HKCU and want to switch from HKCU to HKLM and vice-versa, then simply right-click on that particular Registry key. You will find that option to Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/HKEY_CURRENT_USER is visible to you.
This is it! Select the option and you will be able to switch from HKLM to HKCU and vice-versa.

This is actually a very important feature, fortunately, available in Windows 10, because those who frequently access Windows 10 Registry, they sometimes access the wrong root key mistakenly, and then they have to switch back to start with the scratch. But, using this very simple feature, they don’t have to go back, as they can simply right-click on a particular key and open that key under HKLM or HKCU as per the condition.
